Prostate and Prostatitis Self-Assessment Questionnaire
The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and the Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (CPSI) are common tools used to evaluate prostate health and symptoms of prostatitis. Here’s a brief overview of each:
Scoring Instructions:
Each question is scored from 0 (not at all) to 5 (almost always). The total score ranges from 0 to 35, with higher scores indicating more severe symptoms:
– 0-7: Mild
– 8-19: Moderate
– 20-35: Severe
The quality of life question asks how the patient would feel if they had to live with their urinary condition for the rest of their life, scored from 0 (delighted) to 6 (terrible).
Scoring Instructions:
- Pain/Discomfort Domain: Sum of scores for location (0-5), frequency (0-10), intensity (0-10), and urination pain (0-10). Total score range: 0-35.
- Urinary Symptoms Domain: Sum of scores for frequency (0-10) and emptying difficulty (0-10). Total score range: 0-20.
- Quality of Life Domain: Sum of scores for symptom thoughts (0-3), activity interference (0-6), and life impact (0-6). Total score range: 0-15.
OVERALL SCORE
- 0-15: Mild Symptoms
- 16-30: Moderate Symptoms
- 31-45: Severe Symptoms
Self-Scoring
Both the IPSS and CPSI can be self-administered, allowing patients to monitor their symptoms and discuss the results with their healthcare provider.
